Call for Academic Gathering To Defend Academic Freedom

There is now a serious threat to academic freedom, Irish scholarship and indeed, Irish democracy, arising from the proposed implementation of the Croke Park Deal in third level institutions. The right to permanency and tenure to retirement age is the bedrock on which academic freedom rests. This is now under threat.

The imposition of managerialist structures and business models is to be greatly intensified. These proposals have far wider consequences than worsening of conditions of service though this is extremely serious and related to the above matters.

We, the undersigned, call for a public gathering open to all academics on Saturday, next, Jan 22 to express opposition to these threats and to inform the public of their consequences.

    A chairde

The horse bolted some time ago. Had DCU called a strike in 2002, when there was unanimous support for it as expressed at a union general meeting, this situation might have been resolved within the traditional structures.

Instead, SIPTU went behind its members’ back and cut a deal with management that, ironically, management failed to honour. It is also ironic that one of SIPTU’s “negotiators” of this tainted deal is attending this meeting

We have found out the hard way there are only two messages that Irish university management hear; threats of strikes and supreme court rulings. Talk is just assimilated into their narrative

The academic freedom issue that is currently urgent is how to stop privatization of the web

    Is mise, le meas

    Sean
